Calling all Creatives! Branching into the Future: Reusable Christmas Tree Design Brief

The Design Museum and Opportunity Kensington invite designers, artists, architects, and creative thinkers to submit proposals for a striking, demountable Christmas structure to be displayed on the forecourt outside the Design Museum in Kensington during the 2025 festive season. The structure should be re-usable in future years and allow for the tree’s decorations to be updated every year in response to local and national themes.

Submission Requirements – deadline October 10 2025

  • Concept statement (max 500 words)
  • Technical drawings and/or digital renderings of the design
  • Description of materials and construction method (RAMS)
  • Estimated budget and fabrication plan
  • CV or short bio of entrant/team
  • Optional: links to previous relevant work or portfolio

    Key Dates

    Competition launch: September 22 2025

    Submission deadline: October 10 2025

    Winner announced: October 14 2025

    Fabrication: October 15 – November 10 2025

    Installation period: November 10 2025 for 2 days

    Display duration: Initially for 8 weeks, and reused in subsequent years

    Prize

    The winning design will be built and exhibited on the Design Museum forecourt, crediting the designer. The selected designer/team will receive a £2,000 honorarium plus a production budget of £15,000, to include any engineering sign offs required. A steering group will review the submissions and runners-up will be offered a publicity campaign alongside the winning design and its creators.
